Creating Productive Conversations That Yield Positive Results

Most of us know the importance of positive speaking, whether it is internal self-talk or speaking with others. Negative communication typically occurs when we speak out of anger, fail to express our feelings respectfully, or ignore the feelings of others. Positive communication, on the other hand, happens when we express our opinions respectfully and acknowledge the other person's feelings.

If we put out positive conversations, we can expect a higher percentage of positive outcomes. In the workplace, positive communication leads to increased efficiency and employee engagement. The company has stronger, more productive teams and lower staff turnover. If we put out negative conversations, we are essentially practicing the negative and will in the end receive more negative outcomes. In the workplace, that often leads to low productivity and poor employee morale.

It is important to realize when you are engaging in negative communication and turn it around so you can be more positive. Positive communication helps make you more efficient and your company more productive. On the other hand, negative communication can cost your business. Learning the difference can help you promote excellent communication throughout your career.

Negative communications often come out when emotions are high. Think about the last time you spoke negatively to someone. Were you so upset that you could not think clearly enough to properly convey your message? When you let your emotions lead without acknowledging their impact, information is often lost between parties, resulting in misconceptions and hurt feelings. If you hear yourself speaking negatively, stop and take a breath. At times, you may even need to suggest a short break before resuming the conversation. Practice your next statement in your head and think about how you would feel if you were on the receiving end of that statement. In a short time, you can turn that conversation around.

Body language is a type of nonverbal communication in which physical behaviors, as opposed to words, are used to express or communicate information. It includes posture, facial expressions, and hand gestures. According to experts, these nonverbal signals make up a huge part of daily communication. When negotiating, pay attention to nonverbal communication so that your actions match your words and you do not unintentionally send mixed messages.
