Mitigating language and cultural barriers in healthcare communication. Due to the increasing numbers of migrants within this country, and the need for medical care increases, it is important to mitigate the differences between culture and language to ensure all patients receive the same quality of medical care. Active patient participation and shared, informative decision-making are integral to ensuring the highest possible patient outcomes (Schouten et al., 2020). One of the solutions is having ample in-person and virtual translators who can speak hundreds of different languages to be able to properly communicate with patients of all cultures. This ensures that there is not any pertinent information that is misunderstood and the patient is an active member of the discussions.
Additionally, creating patient care plans that adhere to their culture's medical practices and allow for the patients to make their own decisions for what is best for them (Schouten et al. 2020). Approaching the complexity of cultural barriers with tolerance and empathy is essential to creating a holistic medical environment for all patients.
