Description
"To describe is to createa verbal picture," say the editors of Models for Writers. This is what we're going to do in this unit. We'll pay close attention to how writers use language to create "dominant impressions"-- a "single quality, mood, or atmosphere." When writing your paper, you will compose a detailed, sensory "picture" of a person or place you're interested in. The editors of our book say that "good description includes enough vivid details to createa dominant impression and to bring a scene to life, but not so many that readers are distracted, confused, or bored. In any essay that is purely descriptive (like the one we'll be doing), there is room for much detail. Usually, however, writers use description to create the setting for the story, to illustrate ideas, to help clarify a definition..." The techniques we'll be practicing in this unit will be carried into all others, so pay close attention.

In The Least You Should Know, read Comma Rules 4,5, and 6. Complete exercises 1-5.
Insert the necessary commas into the following paragraph (according to comma rules 4,5, and 6). In a parenthetical after each comma, I want you to write down which rule (4,5, or 6) you used. For example, you'd write: "Mary, (rule #6) my charming next door neighbor, (rule #6) gave me a zucchini from the garden." Send me the revision through the Drop-Box Note: Comma rule #2 may also apply:
There are many NASA facilities spread throughout the United States. The most well known of these centers in California is the Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in Pasadena home of the annual Tournament of Roses Parade. The parade itself is not a NASA project however. Another of California's facilities is the Ames Research Center where NASA scientists use massive wind tunnels in their research. There are also NASA facilities in Texas Virginia Alabama New York New Mexico and Maryland to name a few. The most famous center of all of course has to be the John F. Kennedy Space Center.
In addition to correcting the above paragraph, take a few minutes to compose sample sentences that demonstrate each of the six comma rules. Be sure to identify which sentence each rule applies to. (For example: "I bought bread, fish, and wine. This is comma rule #2"). Though this might seem a strange or tedious exercise, you are in essence creating a comma rule "key" for yourself. I will check these 6 sentenc to make sure that you are using the commas correctly. You should then print it out and refer to it as you write.
