Correctional Systems Final Project -
Create Your Own Correctional System
Using information learned in the course (and from independent research), students will construct their own model for an effective and efficient correctional system in the United States, one that aims to be an improvement over current systems. For the purpose of this assignment, the model should be designed as a federal correctional system and only incorporate the court and corrections components (not police or prosecutorial) of the criminal justice system.
Conditions and Improvements -
In developing your correctional system, you will describe current correctional conditions/practices in the following topics/areas, and offer data-supported suggestions for improvement in the new system:
- Purpose and goals of punishment
- Types and goals of sanctions
- Sentencing process
- Alternatives to incarceration
- Incarceration
- Legal rights for offenders
- Types of facilities and institutional organization (administration)
- Inmate programming (work, education, religion, leisure, etc.)
- Release preparation
- Community supervision (probations, parole, etc.)
Operation and Efficiency
Students aren't required to make changes in areas they believe to be operating effectively and efficiently; however, you will need to support this position with evidence from your research.
Prisons Abroad
In addition, students will also research the correctional systems of at least two other countries (choose from Canada, Germany, England, Norway, or Australia) and incorporate at least two best practices utilized by these countries into your proposed model system. Support your choices with information you obtained in your research.
