Start by placing the three lights so they create three parallel lines of light. Place the semi-circular lens about 10 centimeters away from the lights.

1. Note that the lights now cross at a point on the other side of the lens. Why do they bend that way? What is this point called? Measure the distance, and calculate the refractive index of the lens. What happens to that point when you flip the lens around? Why?

2. Find the (double) concave lens. Draw it. Place the concave lens just in front of the semi-circular lens. Measure the point where the lines of light cross and calculate the refractive index of the new lens (hint: you might have to account for a second part). Who or when would this lens be most useful for? Why?

3. Find the (double) convex lens. Draw it. Place the convex lens just in front of the semi-circular lens. Measure the point where the lines of light cross (Hint: you might need to account for something again). Who or when would this lens be most useful for? Why?

4. Angle two of the lights so that the paths of light cross before the semicircular lens. Find a lens that puts the focal point at a similar distance as in Q1. Which lens did you use? Why does this work? What situation is this similar to?

5. Do these exercise work if you move the lens far away from the light sources? Why/why not? What does this tell you about the lights?
