Introduction and Alignment

In the previous workshop you learned to format web pages with style sheets. Now you be using CSS to create visual effects.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:

Use color on web pages.

Create style sheets that configure common color and text properties.

Add images to web pages using the image element.

Background Information

Visual elements add interest and can enhance the content of a web page. It is important to learn how to use visual elements effectively. CSS provides you with the flexibility to render format areas of your page in many different ways to make it more appealing. Take a look at the new CSS properties that are introduced in Table 4.1 on pages 138-140 in Chapter 4. Practicing writing style sheets and working with the various CSS properties and HTML elements allows you to create multiple visual effects.

To experiment with various styles you should add them to a web page that calls your styles so that you can view them and make sure they render correctly. Styles often do not look the same in different browsers. To ensure that your styles will work in the most commonly used browser, you should test your pages. The CSS validator listed in the Resources is a good place to try out your styles.

Instructions

Design a new web page using embedded CSS to configure a background color and text color. Include the following in your web page.Your name

Use an h1 header that you have configured, using element selector with drop shadow text, transparent background color, and a sans-serif font

A description of your favorite hobbies and activities

Configure a CSS class that stylizes this description list

A photo of yourself (be sure to optimize the image for display on the Web)

Write the CSS for an id called holder that is configured to 80% width and centered

Put your photo in a <div> that uses the id holder

Make sure that your image is accessible by using an alt tag, etc.

Make this image a hyperlink by adding a link to it to a favorite hobby site or your email with a mailto link

Save the page as yourlastname.html.

Test your page by using a CSS validator.

Refer to section 3.6 ‘CSS Class, Id, and Descendant Selectors' in Chapter 3 for help with writing classes, id and descendant selectors.

Put the web page and image file into a zip file.

When you have completed your assignment, save a copy for yourself and submit your zip file to your instructor using the Dropbox by the end of the workshop.
