Expand upon and refine last week's exploratory material to create poem of place. Note that this poem of place can be written in verse (like Smith's or Plath's) or in prose (like Forche's). Note too that the poem's speaker can be you or someone else -- and you don't have to (and perhaps even shouldn't) use every detail that you came up with in last week's listing and freewriting.
Instead you probably will want to expand upon and develop selected details and images that you came up with. Choose wisely and be sure to show (not tell!) us what we should experience. Use all of the senses in order to really get us inside of the physicality of the experience. Help us experience the place up close, in real time.
Remember that concreteness and specific, sensory detail are what make something "poetic" -- not flowery language or abstraction.
(And one iron rule: Even though Smith uses end rhyme very well in her poem, you may not use end-rhyme for this experiment -- or for any of the writing experiments you'll complete in CW 101. Instead I encourage you to find other ways to foreground rhythm and musicality and sonic torque in your poems -- and in your short stories as well -- in fact, in all of your writing!)
Note: Unless you have specific spacing requirements for or visual elements in your creative writing experiment, please paste the text of your experiment into iLearn. PLEASE UPLOAD A FILE ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT WRITING IN STANDARD PROSE.
