Ver 1. Volunteer handbook.

Create One volunteer handbook at an Animal Shelter that includes the followings:

  • Rules of the road manuals for the volunteers, many who drive the transport vans back and forth on two to five-day-long trips to kill shelters, returning with animals to the Animal Shelter.
  • Policies on alcohol or drug use.
  • Statements about equal opportunity, prohibition of sexual harassment
  • Information about the not-for-profit's position on conceals/carry weapons.
  • Policy on how the work equipment is to be used; telephones, computers, even the vans, and airplanes used by the Animal Shelter.
  • Statement to volunteers as to how they are to treat the animals in their care.
  • Information on how interactions with shelter workers should happen.

Scenario.

The Animal Shelter is a small not-for-profit with 21 full-time employees, but over 300 volunteers. It is dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs from kill shelters, transporting them out of the area (usually southern rural towns or small Midwest cities) making them available in larger northern cities for adoption.   One of their preferred placement agencies is Animal Friends on Camp Horne Road.

The Animal Shelter uses private airplanes and vans to transport animals, usually dogs but also cats and other former pets.  Regularly, they make air and land trips to kill shelters contacting them to bring rescue-able and place-able animals to no kill animal shelters. They are also considered a critical resource during natural disasters, such as hurricanes and tornadoes in the southern region because the shelters need to make room; they serve as a kennel for owners who have had heavy damage or have lost their homes.
