Question: If you ever heard someone say, "I have the 'gist' of it," the person is saying he understands the main idea. A GIST Statement is one of many tools for reflecting on new information to get to the central theme. Reflection will help you see how the information is connected and help you remember it later. You can use it in any learning situation. Follow the instructions below to create your GIST Statement:

  1. First, list at least twenty important ideas or words from the module. Try to write at least three per lesson.
  2. Reflect on your list and create one sentence that summarizes the main idea linking your words together. You might choose to use some of the words in your list, or none at all. Restating ideas in your own words will help you remember the concepts.
  3. Your sentence should be no more than twenty words long. You may need to cut down your sentence several times to meet this goal. Once you do, you should have a finely crafted summary of your learning to share with your instructor.
