Consumer Medication Apps for Medication Management and Patient Safety: Heuristic
You are working as a clinical informatics consultant to recommend medication safety apps for use by patients to address the core patient safety issues of the client which include 2 primary concerns. The first concern is the need to accurately record and maintain an accurate medication list. The second concern is clinical risk assessment of drug-drug interactions.
App Selection (5 points) Identify at least 5 apps which are freely available and have the capacity to create medication lists and have the ability to do drug-drug interaction checking. The apps should be available on both Apple and Android platforms. The client indicates they have some interest in medication reminder functions, patient drug education and the ability to communicate the medication lists with providers, but these are secondary considerations to the ability to create medication lists and check drug-drug interactions. Identify any pertinent criteria which was used in selecting the five potential apps.
App Analysis (35 points) Once you have identified at least five available apps with medication lists and drug-drug interaction checking capacity, select 2 apps to download and testing. Identify which 5 apps you identified as well as the two apps you select for formal testing and the platform that you use (iphone/android).
After app installation on a tablet or phone, the first thing to do is try using the app to assess it function, its user friendly (unfriendly) characteristics and overall sense on what the app can do. This generally takes 10-15 minutes or less to get an overall feel for the software. Please note any interesting features whether favorable or unfavorable as well as any particular notable app functions.
After initial efforts to get familiar with the app interface, your first task will be to attempt to create the following drug profile to simulate a high risk medication list. Based on overall initial impression which app seems to be the most user friendly.
