Question: Create a essay about a subject of your choosing in which you take a stand on a controversial issue related to the subject (in other words, a "thesis") and defend your point of view with documented (researched and cited) support. Follow this general structure:
Make an introduction that creates interest in the issue for the general adult reader. Then take a firm, arguable position on the issue and establish the key supporting points the body of your essay will make.
Within the body paragraphs of the essay, support your position with appropriate evidence, including direct references (quotations and paraphrases) to credible sources (books, periodical articles, articles from reliable web sites, etc.).
Within the body of your essay, devote a section to addressing common objections others typically may have to your point of view.
At the end, include a conclusion that reminds the audience of your argument and persuades them strongly to accept it.
Requirements:
Your essay must be typed and formatted in MLA style (see assigned handouts, video lectures, and textbook readings for guidelines).
Your essay must be at least 1500 words in length.
Your essay must contain direct references, including parenthetical citations, to at least three documented sources.
Your essay must include a bibliography ("Works Cited" page) of sources used.
Although use of direct quotations is expected, they may not comprise more than 20% of the essay's length.
Particularly the use of borrowed but uncited material, is grounds for possible failure or other sanctions, depending on the nature of the issue (see "Instructions" above and video lectures on plagiarism and citing sources).
Your topic and work for this assignment must be original. You may not recycle text or materials from research projects done for other classes.
