Material selection - Assignment
This exercise must be completed using ANSYS Workbench. Use a cover page for the assignment.
The clamp is holding a work piece with a clamping force of 1000 N.
1. Open Assignment 1.wbpz file (this includes the geometry that has been imported into Ansys Workbench along with the subassemblies)
2. Choose a material from the material library and apply it to all parts/components
3. Create the joints
4. Generate mesh
5. Create frictionless supports on the faces of grips A and B that face each other.
6. Apply a clamping force of 1000 N (or a joint displacement on link 2, approx. 6.81e-005 m)
7. Determine the reaction forces on the frictionless supports created in step 5 (should be approx. 1000 N)
8. Determine the minimum safety factor (ideal safety factor = 1.5)
9. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you determine the least expensive material* that results in a minimum safety factor > 1.5 for the loads applied
Please note the force reactions (on the frictionless supports) for each material selected must be 1000 + 50 N. For each material tested, the joint displacement that results in a force reaction of 1000 + 50 N will be different.
10. Save and archive (File name: LastName_Assignment1.wbpz)
