Building Information Modelling

During the delivery of this coursework students will gain an understanding of the importance of sharing project knowledge at an early stage of programme. It is also intended that students will adopt a robust methodology to the structuring and classification of information and asset data.

Students will create a simple federated BIM model of a Pedestrian footbridge for the Campus as indicated in Appendix A. This is for the primary purpose of delivering BIM asset information to the project team at Project Concept Stage. Please use the individual dimensions in Appendix B for the typical cross section.

Models must be created in metres and co-ordinated to a common, clearly de-fined and labelled grid system. Datums will be in metres. All 3D models will be at a true world scale i.e. 1:1.

To limit work load and reduce complexity this model is clearly identified as being required for concept design to enable the design team to commence preliminary de-sign work. It will therefore require a Low level of detail (LoD) and Low level of Infor-mation (LoI)

All models must adhere to the following guidelines:-

1. Use BS1192:2007 Layers organised by engineering discipline

2. Adopt Uniclass 2015 to classify their internal block names and model names

3. The project number can be your student identification number.

Students will use Autocad to create their models.

The federated model will comprise of three discipline models from the following engineering disciplines:-

1. Structural e.g. Footbridge Foundations

2. Fabricated Steelwork

3. Bridge Deckings and any additional handrailing or furniture

Asset data could compromise details such as dimension size, material, role/owner, maintenance requirements etc.

Marks will be allocated as follows:

1. Modelling

2. Grid system

3. Layering

4. Classification

5. Asset data transfer

Students will submit two A3 sheets

Sheet (a) will contain the drawing of their federated model. It does not need to be printed to scale. However the model should be clearly illustrated together with the co-ordinating grid system. Please note that this model is often referred to as a PIM (project information model)

Sheet (b) will contain 3 tables documenting a summary of the layering, classification and asset data. The asset data will be a snapshot from their excel database. Please note that the asset model is often referred to as the Asset Information Model (AIM)

Each of the three models must be clearly labelled, including the structured nam-ing classification.

The simple title block should clearly indicate the students and identification number.

Please note that students should choose a simple engineering model as a basis to illustrate their understanding of how BIM can support the collaboration and sharing of data.

For supporting information, please refer to: BS1192:2007 (this offers specific guidance on layer naming and model co-ordination)
PAS1192 part 2 for BIM concepts

NBS website for Uniclass 2015 (this offers specific guidance on the correct naming and classification of discipline models)

Class notes and Comprehensive Autocad online help system for Autocad 3d solid modelling, block creation, attribute creation and attribute extraction.

Autocad commands that may prove useful include:

1. Extrude - to extrude a 3D solid from a closed polyline

2. Union - to join two solids

3. Vport - to create different views of the simple model

4. Attdef - to create an attribute

5. Block - to create a block

6. Ddatte - to fill in a blocks value

7. Use the data extraction command within Autocad to filter and extract selected block and attribute value. This will enable the development of your Asset information model/database in Excel
