As the EMS administrator responsible for risk management in your organization, you have realized that your organization lacks an updated emergency vehicle operations policy. You have noticed that the number of preventable crashes has increased during the last year and that the cost of these crashes in addition to preventable vehicle incidents is rising.

Create an emergency vehicle (ambulance) operations policy for your organization that will provide guidance to personnel on the expectations regarding vehicle readiness and operations. It should also address what is required, both regulatory and organizationally, to operate an ambulance with or without lights and sirens. Keeping in mind that all processes should be evidence-based or best practices, you may decide to incorporate some requirements from other national organizations related to safe ambulance operations.
