A database is to be designed for a University to monitor students' progress throughout their course of study. The students are reading for a degree (such as BTech, BTech(Hons) MCA, etc) within the framework of the modular system. The University provides a number of courses, each being characterized by its code , title, credit value, course coordinator, teaching staff and the department they come from. A course is co-ordinated by a course coordinator who shares teaching duties with one or more lecturers. A lecturer may teach (and be a course coordinator for) more than one course. Students are free to choose any course they wish but the following rules must be observed: some courses require pre-requisites courses and some degree programs have compulsory courses. The database is also to contain some information about students including their numbers, names, addresses, degrees they read for, and their past performance (i.e. courses taken and examination results).
Represent the complete scenario with the help of ER Diagram (use maximum advanced features) and design logical schema for this database. Also specify desirable constraints and justify your design approach even in a single small step.
Using Join, list the items each customer ordered where the billing_price was lower than the item price (item, billing_price, and price). Sort the results alphabetically by customer name.
Consider a relation schema r(A,B,C,D,E, F) and a set of functional dependencies {A BCD,BCDE,BD,DA}. Determine whether or not (A,E, F) is in BCNF and justify your answer. If (A,E, F) is not in BCNF,find a BCNF decomposition of it.
Show all the data in each of the four tables. Do not show foreign key columns. Write names and e-mail addresses for all customers who have had a stove repair that cost more than $50.
Compute a canonical cover for the above set of functional dependencies (show each step of your derivation with an explanation).
Create a function that returns the day of the week for a specified date. Create a trigger that displays the message "Emp table updated" when an update to the employee table increases the employee's basic salary.
Create a stored procedure that updates the members' balance in the membership table by correctly recording the current or outstanding balance for each customer.
What is lock granularity? Explain the use of BEGIN, COMMIT, and ROLLBACK TRANSACTION statements. Explain the meaning of expression ACID transaction.
Explain what is the purpose of Database? The purpose of a database is to store information about certain types of objects. Give an example of two related TABLES.
Sketch an E-R diagram which reflects the above reuirements. Write a set of relational schemas and identify primary and foreign keys. Try not to include redundant schemas.
Design and build a prototype data warehouse using the data on Spend over £25,000 in the Science and Technology Facilities Council
List the different entities or objects, logical processes, data flows, and data stores that are involved, starting from the time you submitted your time sheet.
