This Week's Detailed Case Study Information Mrs. Adams is 68 years old and has been a resident at Care Villa for the past 6 years. During that time she has experienced several illness situations, many of which have led to transfer to hospital for treatment. Among her many ailments, one of the more significant has been a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). She and her family have learned a great deal about this illness over the past several months and are very well aware that there is no cure. Most treatments are for symptom relief. ALS will take away much of the Mrs. Adam's functional abilities and ultimately result in her death.

Mrs. Adams' illness is progressing faster than anticipated. At this time she is having increasing difficulty taking care of herself. She is becoming more and more weak and requiring a great deal of assistance with personal care. Mrs. Adams is a very proud and independent person. This is very difficult for her to accept. Additionally swallowing is becoming more and more difficult and there has been some discussion about inserting a feeding tube. Again, this is not how Mrs. Adams imagined she would be spending the final days of her life. After much consideration, Mrs. Adams has decided to pursue Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID).

Although her family wants to support Mrs. Adams through the process, they are struggling to accept that their mother wants to end her own life.

Mrs. Adams was the first resident to complete the MAID process at Care Villa. She died peacefully in her room. She spent the evening prior to her death quietly saying goodbye to family members and her close friends. The staff and Care Villa continued to provide resident
and family centred care until the end.
