Science and Math Investigation

Part A

Using the steps in a Scientific Process (as outlined in Lesson 5 and 6) create an investigation of a topic of interest preschool aged children. Write notes, draw sketches, find illustrations (from the Internet) and take photos of each step to be included in a Prezi you will be creating. The six steps that you will be documenting:

  1. Observation - Title of the topic. Explain why is would be of interest to preschool aged children? Explain how it fits into an Inquiry-Based Science.
  2. Background Research - What background research have you done before conducting your experiment/investigation? What questions have you generated?
  3. Hypothesis/Prediction - What do you think will happen when you conduct your experiment/investigation and why?
  4. Experiment/Investigation - Identify what materials will you need for this experiment/investigation? Clearly explain the steps you will take. Take photos of each step of your experiment/investigation.
  5. Evaluation - What data have you collected? Document your findings in a graph or chart.
  6. Application - What was learned from this experiment/investigation? What would children want to do next?

Part B

Consider a typical early learning centre for preschool aged children. Imagine that children were interested in the topic you have chosen for your Science Investigation, and you would like to expand on this interest in other areas of the program. Describe 3 activities and identify the science and math concepts that would be addressed.

Include:

  1. Where you would present this activity (art area, sensory, block, reading, dramatic play, etc.)
  2. Number of children involved
  3. Materials required
  4. Complete details of the activity
  5. Science and math concepts addressed

Part C

Outline how you would set up a Science Centre based on your Science Investigation in Part A.

  • Describe where it would it be situated.
  • Describe all materials you would provide for children to explore.
  • Identify picture books and reference books that would be included.
  • Explain why the centre is developmentally appropriate.
  • Explain how this centre would be different in a Toddler program.
  • Explain how this centre would be different in a School Age program.

With the notes, photos and documentation you have gathered, put together a Prezi presentation that includes all the information from Part A, B and C. This Prezi will be shared with your fellow students in this course. You will share the link with them and they will be conducting a peer assessment of your presentation.
