Assignment Task B -
Description of Assignment Two, Task B - Academic article for Broadside
This exercise combines the academic skills you have developed so far into writing a short article on YOURSELF as a professional, based on one of the issues identified in the unit readings: What is a professional? Am I a professional? What is it that I do that makes me a professional?
Broadside is a quarterly feature newsletter of the Community Child Care Co-operative Ltd (NSW) covering political issues and news affecting the early education and care sector. Each edition provides in-depth analysis of key issues of the day, giving you all the information you need to stay at the forefront of the sector.
Step 1 Review the lecturer's notes and complete the readings for Topics 1-5
Step 2 Your paper must be written as an academic essay, with headings.
DO NOT USE DIRECT QUOTES. You must demonstrate that you can summarise in your own words the ideas that you find in the literature. This is called paraphrasing. Please review Quiz 2 to ensure that you are paraphrasing correctly.
NOTE: A submission for Broadside must be presented as an A4 manuscript; with formatted title and headings. Do not format your submission in two columns.Marks for use of information communication technologies (ICT) for this task refer to formatting a submission (margins, fonts, headings), and inclusion of appropriate figure(s) or table(s).
Step 3 Choose the focus for your article
It is an article about yourself as a professional. You only have 900 words so you cannot write about every aspect of being a professional. Instead, choose one idea from the lecture notes and readings in Module 1 as your focus. Create a suitable and interesting title for your article.
Step 4 Search the literature
Use your skills and knowledge from the library quiz (Quiz 4) to locate peer-reviewed articles and book chapters from the UNE library about your topic.
Step 5 Plan your article (Your plan must be submitted with your article)
- Use either linear or non-linear planning.
- Your plan must indicate each paragraph, and the one point it will present/argue. It should also indicate what literature you will use to support the point in each paragraph. Also include an interesting title for your article (like those in other editions of Rattler). This will help you to focus your writing.
- A 900 word paper would usually have 5-6 paragraphs: an introduction, 3 or 4 points (paragraphs) (they have have sub-headings too), and a conclusion.
- You must include at least one reference to a peer reviewed article in each of the body paragraphs.
- You must refer to at least two of the readings from the Unit.
- You must refer to at least one peer reviewed article/book that you have sourced yourself from the UNE Dixson Library.
- You must have a minimum of four different sources in your references.
- You must include one or more images (tables, figures, diagrams, photos). Any image included in your article must be specifically referred to in your writing, that is, it must have a purpose for being included; and it must be labelled correctly. Follow the ASO guidelines for labelling and referring to a figure: Tables and figures.
- You must include your plan when you submit your article.
Step 6 Write your article
Your article must have:
- a title
- an introduction and a conclusion
- three or four subheadings - one for each of the paragraphs in the body of the paper
- a list of references
- word count
