Title: Understand Cottage Among Trees
The artwork, Cottage Among Trees, by Rembrandt Van Rijin is a completed drawing of a landscape. The drawing of this landscape is completely different from Rembrandt's rendering of human figures. Rembrandt's rendering of figures is precise, intense and detailed. But this drawing of the landscape is the opposite of Rembrandt typical art style. The landscape drawing is carefree, expressive and simplify. Rembrandt uses many art elements techniques and lines to be carefree and to demonstrate the beauty of the cottage in the landscape.
Rembrandt is one of the well-known artists that was known for using chiaroscuro when rendering human figures. Rembrandt had knowledge about how lighting had a major impact on subjects and the surrounding area. This knowledge of lighting is demonstrated in this drawing. Rembrandt creates the shadow by using the hatching technique near the cottage, trees and the gate. The hatching technique are the lines that are really close to each other, and these lines create a shadow. The lines on the ground create the shadows for the cottage and this makes the drawing kind of realistic.
Rembrandt uses linear perspective to make the composition realistic and leads the viewer to the main focus of the artwork. Most of the artist from the Renaissance were focus on analyzing and studying figures and landscape, so they will be able to create art as realistic as possible. Linear perspective also leads the viewer to the cottage. The gates are leading the viewer to the cottage which is the main focus in the artwork. Also, the pathway leading to the door is also leading the viewer to the cottage which is also considered leading lines. Leading lines can lead the viewer to the main focus point in the art piece.
There is a major emphasis on symmetry. There is a similar amount of trees on both side of the cottage and the gate is on both sides too. The background lines are also symmetrical. The symmetry in landscape creates this harmony and calmness feeling in art. It is common to for artwork to have symmetrical scenery, so it makes the artwork seem calming and peaceful. It is more evident that Rembrandt cared so much about symmetry that they even add an extra paper on the right to make sure that the landscape was symmetrical.
The landscape is made of different types of lines and also have different thickness. The lines are imperfect and loose lines are seen everywhere in the drawing. The different type of lines is seen the most on the trees. The trees have circular lines to indicate the leaves and the roundness of the tree. But also, the lines on the tree also give this feeling there is breeze moving the tree leaves.
The different art elements techniques seen in the drawing such as linear perspective, symmetry and different types of line create an expressive but beautiful drawing of landscape. All these techniques contribute to a balance, realistic and calmness aura to the artwork.
