Assignment Part 1: Review the Adaptive Cycle lecture slides and watch this video to reinforce your understanding of adaptive cycles:

YouTube watch: Ecology and Society: The Adaptive Cycle

Choose a socio-ecological system. Your example must be one not covered in class or in the posted video (i.e., it can't be forest succession, forest pest outbreak, U.S. auto industry). You may want to choose one of these examples (but others will work too - as long as it is a socio-ecological system). Feel free to explore online to find a system that interests you. It might be helpful for you if you did this assignment on your Ignite talk topic.

  • energy (fossil fuels and/or green energy)
  • capture fisheries
  • timber production
  • ecotourism
  • aquaculture
  • freshwater resources
  • agriculture (urban, big business, local farms)

Assignment Part 2: Create an adaptive cycle for the system you've chosen and provide a short written (bullets are fine) explanation for each phase for your system. You may not be able to identify all four phases, but try to postulate which phase we are in now and where you think we will be in the future. There is not going to be a single, correct answer for most of the examples. I am looking to see that you understand the definitions of the different phases and that you have critically thought about how socio-ecological systems operate within the framework of adaptive cycles.
