Information Systems Course Project

You will be provided with simulated data from a hospital. The primary data set will include ER wait times, and supporting tables ranging from ER Staffing schedules to bed turnaround time. You will use this data to conduct an analysis into potential factors impacting ER wait times and recommend possible process improvements based on the dataand any additional research you have conducted. If you use external data resources make sure they are credible and properly cited in your presentation.

Your project must include the following components:

1. Import and Structure Data

a. Use the provided data sets to import tables into a blank access database

b. Use database normalization techniques to split the flat file databases into a relational database.

c. Make sure to utilize primary and foreign keys so the data can be queried effectively.

2. Exploratory Data Analysis & Reporting

a. Review the provided data sets to explore ER wait times, summarize the data and correlate it to the provided data sets. I.e. are wait times lower when more staff is assigned? Hint: do not stop there.

b. Your exploratory analysis must use one query that aggregates and at least one chart.

c. Use the queries from your exploratory analysis to create Access Report objects summarizing what you have discovered.

3. Interactivity

a. Create an Access Form that has an interactive component (drop down box, radio button, etc.)

b. When interacted with your form should requery and display the requested information, taking into account the users direct input?

4. Presentation

a. Create a PowerPoint presentation, it should include data from the reports you created as well as recommendations for how best to address the length of wait times in the ER.

b. Recommendations will be evaluated based on how feasible they are. You must consider patient safety, quality of care, cost of implementation and other limitations. No solution is perfect or free, but your recommendations should reflect consideration of these factors.

c. You should have more than one recommendation, but be sure to support your recommendations with data and detail. A single sentence is not a recommendation.

Project Instructions

Import and Structure Data
Grading:
1. Does the access database contain tables from the provided data sets
a. One Table
b. Two Tables
c. Three Tables

2. Are those tables connected in the relationship manager
a. All
b. Some (Fractional)
3. Do the relationships (connections) utilize primary and foreign keys
a. Correctly
b. Nice Try

Exploratory Data Analysis & Reporting

1. Is there a aggregates query using ‘Totals' in the Access Database
a. Yes
i. 1
ii. 2
iii. 3

2. Are there charts that use the aggregate (Totals) Query (Charts can be in Access or Excel)
a. Yes, one
b. At least two

3. Do the charts demonstrate something useful about the data
a. Yes and they were clearly labeled and easy to understand
b. Yes but difficult to interpret
c. Attempts were made (fractional)

4. Is there at least one aggregate query based report in the Access database?
a. Yes
b. Partial credit available

Interactivity
1. Is there an access form with an interactive component?
a. Yes

2. Does it work? Specifically does it display data based on the interactive component.
a. Yes
b. Partial credit available. If you can't create an interactive form create a form that displays information.

Presentation

1. Is there a powerpoint presentation included in the report
a. Yes

2. Does it make reasonable recommendations on how to address ER Wait times
a. 2+
b. 1

3. Are those recommendations supported by the data and analysis?
a. Yes, powerpoint includes data and charts that supports the recommendations
b. Yes the powerpoint contains data that supports the recommendations
c. The recommendations make no reference to data
