You are required to watch the film, Highway 45: The killing of RCMP Officer, Dennis Strongquill. This is available through the Buchanan Library and also on YouTube. Your responsibility is to provide examples and analyze content from the film that relate directly to the content from this course.
Part A: In this section, you must analyze the narrative of the film using concepts from ALL SIX modules. You will be awarded five marks for every module.
Here are some questions you might consider addressing. You are not limited by these questions and are encouraged to go further and deeper in your analysis. There are also connections and overlapping elements between the modules, and you are also expected to identify these connections where appropriate.
Module 1: Where on Hagan''s pyramid does the murder of Cst. Dennis Strongquill fall? Why is this case?
Module 2: What theories can be best used to explain the behaviour of the Sand brothers?
Module 3: How did the media report these crimes? What perceptions were left with the public? Is there significance to this happening in a rural Manitoba community from a data perspective?
Module 4: Did you see any examples of systemic social issues such as poverty, alcohol/drug abuse, lack of education, etc.?
Module 5: What were the primary and secondary effects of these crimes on Cst. Strongquill''s family, fellow officers, community, etc.? How was Restorative Justice incproprioated?
Module 6: What could have been done to prevent this specific event from happening? Consider discussing the importance of Community Policing as a proactive form of prevention.
Part B: In this section , you are expected to discuss and analyze the role of post-incident investigations, both of officer/employee conduct and of serious incidents that happen during the course of carrying out the duties of the job. What is the purpose of these investigations? Who completes the investigations? If you choose to discuss the police, consider the value of civilian-led police oversight in addition to internal investigations. If you are interested in corrections, discuss how investigations occur, who completes them, and the overall purpose. With both options, are there things these agencies could do to prevent serious incidents from happening in the first place?
IMPORTANT NOTE: The medium you choose to use to communicate the information in this assignment is very flexible. You are free to choose the one that is most interesting to you. Here are some examples:
1) You could choose to create a rich picture using a hand-drawn rich picture, a digital collage, or a handmade poster board (see additional information on these formats below).
2) You could also choose to create a digital presentation (ex. PowerPoint), Prezi, etc.) or other video/media demonstration.
3) You could write a traditional paper if you are more comfortable but you might also consider using a series of memes with corresponding written explanations of why you chose them and their relevance to the topic.
Feel free to run other ideas by your instructor.
Depending on the medium you choose, you may have to submit a brief summary that explains your content.
Tools and Tips if you choose to do a Rich Picture:
If you are creating a digital collage, there is an extensive library of digital icons; check out The Noun Project. You may also find these resources helpful: Padlet. and Pictochart. Now, let''s spark your creativity. Consider this example of digital piracy. This rich picture represents how criminology, along with society''s perceptions about illegal digital downloads (music, movies, software, etc.), impact criminal justice practices. Please note this example shows the process of creating a rich picture. You are not expected to create a video like this, just the static image and a written summary that explains your visual.
You may still be thinking: but what is a rich picture? Essentially, it is a mind map-a diagram which captures connections and processes. It is simply a device to structure your thinking. For more background on the power of rich pictures, including how they can convey the complex interplay of related ideas, watch the following short video.

If you are not the best drawer, you may find you are more comfortable pulling together photos and icons. Here is an example of a digital collage/rich picture:

Remember, you can choose whatever format you prefer (digital, paper, poster board). However, if you are working on paper/poster board, you will need to photograph/scan your work for electronic submission. The visual representation supports the content. The quality of the visual representation (i.e., how well you draw) is less important than the information you provide and the understanding you demonstrate.
