"Mason bees lay their eggs in small holes found in trees or wooden buildings. A female Mason Bee will enter a hole and place a mud plug at the end of it. Then she will bring 15 to 20 pieces of pollen and nectar into the hole. She then lays her egg and places another mud plug into the hole and starts the process over with 15 to 20 pieces of pollen and nectar, an egg, a mud plug, until the hole is filled. She will block the end of the hole with a final plug of mud and find a new hole to start the process again. A female Mason Bee lives for about a month and can lay 1 to 2 eggs each day. In 3 to 10 days, depending on the weather conditions, the eggs hatch, and the larvae eat the pollen and nectar balls. Then they spin a cocoon and enter a pupae stage. By midsummer, they transform into adults, but they stay in the cocoon until the following spring when they emerge from their nest holes."
