Resume Packet Assignment
Please read this document fully and attach it at the end of your completed assignment.
In this assignment you are required to create a resume packet, which includes a job posting, cover letter, resume, and follow up letter. Each element is described briefly below, but can found in detail in Successful Writing at Work: 4th Edition. The resume is worth more than the other elements because your packet should center around it. The follow-up letter is worth less because it is more formulaic.
Job posting:
The job posting will include a screenshot of one ideal job that you have found from online sources;
It will also include a 250 word introduction.
Your first step is to identify one or two ideal jobs in similar or identical fields from popular online job search sites. The jobs should be related to your major, and this introduction will connect your academic and professional history with an ideal future form of employment.
Cover letter:
The cover letter has several parts but should be under one page:
A concise, professional, and accurate letterhead;
Opening (1 paragraph): introduction, why you are writing, how you found out about the job;
Body (2-3 paragraphs): qualifications, reference examples from resume, concise and easy to read;
Closing (1 paragraph): conclusion, ask for interview, indicate your schedule;
Please include a copy of your resume as an enclosure.
Follow-up letter:
The follow-up letter will also include several parts and should be under one page:
Letterhead;
Opening (1 paragraph): Gratitude for the interview, highlight a feature of the company you like;
Body (2-3 paragraphs): Re-emphasize qualifications, ask for contacts in the field or find a way to engage the person who interviewed you, be concise and flow well;
Closing (1 paragraph): Find a way to end the letter politely without being redundant.
