Case: Stephen Case study

A walk-in client with alcohol and other drugs issues.
Three weeks ago, 25 years old Stephen was admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act due to substance use induced psychosis.
Stephen was treated in hospital for two weeks and gradually improved, until he felt almost his old self again.
As part of his discharge plan, Stephen agreed to participate in AOD counselling, however the first appointment wasn't for two weeks.
Stephen felt committed to abstinence, once home, he found it difficult to stay sober and, upon finding unused Methamphetamine from before his admission in the house, he lapsed.
Whilst intoxicated, Stephen experienced symptoms of psychosis that he found distressing and, once sober, he attended his GP for help.
Stephen has a two-year history of polysubstance use.
Stephen lives with his mother who has tried different ways of seeking support for him, however, it is only after this episode of psychosis and hospital admission that Stephen has felt ready to make changes to his substance use behaviours.
Stephen started using alcohol and other drugs at 17 years of age and, within six months, was regularly using methamphetamine.
Stephen and his mother experienced domestic violence for many years, perpetrated by Stephen's father.
Stephen father has history of Alcohol and drugs used.
When client was 16 years old, his father assaulted both him and his mother severely and was subsequently arrested.
Stephen's father was incarcerated, and they have had no contact since the assault other than at court, where Stephen gave evidence against his father.
