Project - Internet-of-Things Hacking

This project is available only for the students of MSc Cyber Security.

The Internet of Things (loT) is a paradigm where everyday objects are interconnected and communicate with each other over the Internet. Many of these objects are low-cost sensors and actuators. However, the low-production cost has not been beneficial to high -level information security. The widespread use of insecure loT devices in smart cities poses a severe threat to society. This is because important and critical functions of the city are controlled through loT-driven intelligent solutions, such as body sensors monitoring patients' health, motion sensors monitoring room occupancy, and others.

In recent years, the information security community highlighted the importance of ethical (or white hat) hacking in terms of security evaluation. Ethical hackers use their hacking skills for defensive purposes and are also known as security analysts. Their responsibilities include finding and disclosing vulnerabilities before attackers can exploit these.

The primary focus of this project is to select and explore the information security of an loT device and then attempt to hack it using different hacking techniques and tools. The student is expected to deliver a project report that should address the following things:

- Identifying typical weaknesses found in common smart city loT devices. Identifying vulnerable devices, i.e identify devices that exhibit the most easily exploitable vulnerabilities with the potentially severest consequences. From the collected information, select the most vulnerable loT device.

- Identifying pen testing methods that can address the most promising attack surfaces. Specify if it is possible to create a proof-of-concept exploit of the chosen vulnerable loT device.
