Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation Assignment -

The assignment shall consist of four parts:

Part I. Proposal

Part II. The entrepreneurial profile of an Omani entrepreneur and his contribution to society.

Part III. Support Systems / Obligatory Requirements.

Part IV. The student's personal view and appreciation of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Part 1. Proposal details are as follows. Please see template as attached in this assessment

a) Brief background of the entrepreneur and his/ her company (maximum of 2 paragraphs).

b) The plan of action as regard to collection of data (the primary and secondary sources of data).

c) The timeline (e.g. list of activities with projection of completion, from approval of the entrepreneur to submission of assessment).

d) References, at least 5, in C.U. Harvard References style. References should be a combination of journals (70%), websites and books.

Part II. The Profile of an Omani Entrepreneur and His Contributions to Society.

The student is expected to create a profile of an Omani entrepreneur (only SME entrepreneurs) by detailing his/her entrepreneurial characteristics/competencies and his/her contributions to society and the economy. In particular, the student should write the following:

Q1. Introduction. This contains a discussion of who the entrepreneur is and his/her organization focusing on how the business was started. This discusses in concrete terms the contribution of entrepreneur and his/her organization to the society and economy of Oman (e.g. employment, community development). Some statistics in terms of contributions to economic growth can be mentioned (300 words).

Q2. Profile of the Entrepreneur. The profile shall present the entrepreneurial characteristics / competencies of the entrepreneur providing solid evidences on each particular characteristics / competency. Real-life experiences of the entrepreneur should be used as references for evidences. This profiling should use both the primary (through interview and questionnaire) and secondary sources of data. The student should write at least ten best characteristics of the entrepreneur based on PEC results. Discussions should focus on the understanding of the students of the characteristics (both from self and secondary sources readings, with references); and the solid evidences of this characteristics (1200 words).

Graph should be inserted in the final report and in the discussion part (not in the appendix). Discussions should highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the entrepreneur (referring to each characteristic as either strength or weakness of the entrepreneur); and should mention as well the business related experiences of the entrepreneur. There must be citation.

Part III. Support Systems / Obligatory Requirements. Discussion should be very specific of the industry to which the company / organization of the entrepreneur belongs. Please mention the industry in your discussion.

a. Evaluate the Support Systems available in Oman- Assess two Support Systems on: 1. Kind of ventures they support; 2. Amount of Money they provide; 3. Other Support Services (e.g. advices, helping with legal formalities. Training, etc.). Presentation of details should in be table form with discussions. One mark is allotted for brief discussion of the industry.

b. Discuss the Obligatory requirements- Identify and briefly discuss exactly what legal formalities must be undertaken to set up a new venture.

Part IV. The Student's Personal View and Appreciation of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The student is expected to:-

1. Write his/her personal entrepreneurial profile of his/her citing, in clear terms, his/her entrepreneurial strengths and weaknesses. The personal profiling shall be done based on personal entrepreneurial competency (PEC) scoring sheet. As well, the student should narrate his/her personal exposures and experiences about business and his / her past and/or present engagements in creative and innovative undertakings. This should include a discussion on how his/her personal exposure and experiences has affected his/her appreciation of innovation and entrepreneurship. (750 words).

Please note that interview transcript and PEC questionnaire (for both the entrepreneur and self) should be included as appendices in the final submission.

Total Words – 3000 words. Instructions to the Student: Submission deadline is on the 9th week of this semester. Submit the individual work through the Moodle within the prescribed period. Late submission shall be penalized as per MEC policy as mentioned in the MIG. Part II - Maximum 5 marks for each discussion of entrepreneurial characteristic. There must be citation. There shall be a deduction of 2 marks from total marks on Q2 without inclusion of the graph. Note: No mark will be awarded to any discussion that has no reference to PEC results. Part III- One mark is allotted for brief discussion of the industry. Part IV - No mark will be awarded to any discussion that has no reference to PEC results.
