Step One: Select one option from below

First option (select an environmental humanities artistic expression): students can focus their portfolio on an environmental art/artists, writers, poets and thinkers we have covered in class (for example, students can create a portfolio on the art transforming urban environments, or the environmental poetry covered earlier in the semester, or gardening as art).

Second option (select an environmental humanities artistic expression from outside of the class): students can create a portfolio on a contemporary environmental art form inside or outside of the U.S. The sky is literally the limit on what you can cover with this option. In the past students have produced portfolios that include environmental dance, environmental music (i.e. green metal/environmental heavy metal and other styles of music), environmental architecture, etc..)

Third option (select Orlando based artist or art form focused on the environment) students can create a portfolio featuring environmental artistic forms found locally in Orlando (the Orlando focused portfolio can be environmental artistic expression created about the city, these can be in the form of public art (i.e. murals) or a variety of other art forms. The artist can be by local Orlando artists, by UCF faculty and students producing environmental cultural expressions. (HINT: you can look at the UCF Art Department or the Arts and Humanities websites to identify potential UCF faculty in the humanities producing environmental art, art forms or creative expressions locally in Orlando. Or, you can search the websites of various arts institutions in Orlando-- such as the Shakes, or the Dr. Philips Center for the Arts, the REP Theater, or the Orlando Science Museum). The great thing about this option is that you could potentially take your own pictures of the works you are covering and utilize these as your images for this assignment.

Step Two: Identify 3 openly-licensed images

Find three openly-licensed images that show the art, artist, and/or the art form you are writing about. See the video clips uploaded by our course's instructional designer Mr. Jim Paradiso. This will provide valuable information on how to find openly-licensed images and how to upload the images and create your portfolio via Pressbooks. If you need information on how to locate openly-licensed images. please do a Google search. Instructions on how to identify openly-licensed images have been provided under "STEP 3" below.

Step Three: After you identify your art form/ artist and images, please write an original analysis.

Your original analysis should cover each of the four sections below. You should write at least one paragraph for each section, and keep in mind that quality is more important than quantity.

Please edit your writing to avoid spelling and grammatical errors.

Section 1

Preface: Please state your name, the title of your work, and the type of Creative Commons license (Links to an external site.) you plan to use when you publish it. Yes-that's right! This is an opportunity to become a published author.

If you haven't published content before, it's pretty straightforward. Take a look at the types of licenses you can use and decide which one best fits how you'd like to share your project with the world: https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/licensing-types-examples/licensing-examples/ (Links to an external site.).

Introduction: Please state clearly what your portfolio is about. For example, you can begin by writing "... The work of (name of artist) captures XYZ ideas and has been celebrated for the ability to encourage audiences to think about ABC..." (this is just an example)...

Please identify artists (by name) or identify the genre/topic (e.g., Chicana Poetry/Latino Museums)

Section 2

Theme: Clearly identify two themes that your portfolio project is addressing. (These themes are to be of your own choosing.)

For example, you might find that the art/artist is producing work that centers the theme of the earth as home, or of nature out of control, or toxicity and history, or nature and cultural belonging, or identity and nature, or food, or dance and the environment.

Section 3

Analysis: Conduct background research on the environmental art form/artist you selected-utilizing what content may be available online via websites, blogs, or in some cases academic journal articles.

Provide historical information about the images you selected-when was it produced, what prompted the production? Provide information about what historical events may have influenced the artist. In answering what is the history of your selected images, you can add information about how the images are understood today, or how these could be interpreted in the future.

Section 4

Application: Write one paragraph about why your selected art form/artist is important to understanding the society within which it was created.

For this section, you can imagine that you are teaching someone/a group about your topic and have to convey to the audience why this art/artist/art form is noteworthy and applicable to understanding the society it represents. You may also want to include a statement about how the art/artist provides a distinctive or unconventional way to understand a topic.
