Persuasive speech
Overview: Your job is to create a persuasive speech with supporting visual aids.
• The goal of your speech is to inform the audience of a problem and propose a solution-- you are presenting an argument!
• You should use the three main appeals in your argument (ethos, pathos, logos).
• You will create a visual aid or presentation to submit with your speech.
• You will submit a recording of your final speech at the end of the unit. It will be recorded directly into the Pearson Online Classroom.
Choosing a Topic:
• Think of a problem and a solution-- this is the basis of your speech!
• You can choose a serious topic, or you can make it lighthearted. Either way, you are presenting a problem and proposing a solution.
Draft
• You will submit an outline of your speech.
• You can complete and submit this outline. (Recommended)
• If you choose NOT to use the outline provided, your draft should be 500-800 words, or about 1-2 pages single spaced.
• Focus on the basics- set up your argument, supporting details, and organizational structure.
• Use the "Motivated Sequence Pattern" to structure your speech.
Discussion
• You will post your Persuasive Speech outline.
• You will reply to at least two of your classmates.
• In your replies, you will list one thing you
think your peer has done well, and one thing you think they could add to or improve.
• Responses such as, "Great job!" "I like your speech!" "You did a good job!" etc will not earn credit.
Final audiovisual (presentation)
• In addition to your speech recording, you will also submit a visual presentation to support your speech.
• Some options for this presentation are Google Slides/PowerPoint, Prezi, Powtoon, Visme, Canva, Zoho Show.
• Your presentation should aim to support and summarize your speech- include the main points, and add images and visuals to further support.
• Don't just copy and paste your whole speech into bullet points-- this should ADD to your speech, not repeat it.
Final Speech (Recording)
• You will record yourself giving your speech as your final portfolio.
• The goal of this portfolio is bigger than simply writing- you are also practicing your speaking skills.
• Focus on your presentation, timing, and vocal patterns. Be engaging!
