Family: Function: Provides for care of children, procreation.
What kind of family system will you create? Nuclear or extended families, marriage or no marriage?
For the system of procreation, will you have arranged marriages, monogamous marriages, polygamous marriages, communal marriages, or no marriages? Will you allow divorce? Who will care for the children?
Education: Function: Transmits cultural knowledge, trains new generation.
The education system must go beyond your generation - how will the next generation be educated?
What types of topics will be taught? Will it be mandatory education? How many hours, days, and why? How will the expenses of education be covered?
Religion: Function: Provides set of shared values and rituals that reaffirm them; supplies answers about the unknown. What type of religion will you create on your new planet to provide a set of shared values for all?
Political Institution / Government: Function: Allocates power, maintains order, provides for
community coordination and defense.
How will rules be made and enforced? How will leaders be selected?
Economy: Function: Provides for the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
NOTE: Economy is not about money! How will the food on the ship be distributed among the colonists during the first year? How will tasks be divided so that the group will be self-supporting within one year?Purpose:
This assignment is designed to help students understand the importance, functions and characteristics of the five basic institutions, as well as apply some of the sociological concepts regarding groups and leadership styles to the task of creating a better society.
Task:
To create a "perfect society" with the other members of your group - outlining the way the five basic institutions of family, education, religion, government, and economy will be structured to carry out its functions. Be sure that your institutions meet their functions: Come up with one set of answers from group for each institution, and make sure that all group members can agree and can explain reasoning for choices.
