X. Mr John is working on a project to create a new inventory management system for a food manufacturer in Sheffield, England. The CEO has told the shareholders that the new system will be in place in six months, without discussing this first with the PMO.
At the start of the project, the costs of the project were estimated as £150,000 for design, £700,000 for development, £225,000 for quality assurance. The project has spent £450,000 so far. The value of the work completed is £375,000. The CPI for the project is 0.83 and the SPI is 0.8.

Section B (Answer TWO Questions)
Question 4
ABC Plant Installations has commenced a significant customer assignment to design, manufacture and install a large-scale bottling plant at a local glass company. At this initial project stage, it has assembled a project planning team and is undertaking discussions with the customer to produce a high-level project plan. A range of key tasks have been identified and a logical network diagram for the project has been developed. Project activity information is provided in the following table (Table 1) and the initial logical network diagram (Figure 1) has been additionally outlined.
Notes: Resource (ABC) is a special supplier resource and is strictly limited to 60 units.

Figure 2
a) Using the initial logical network structure within Figure 1 as a foundation, complete the diagram using suitable Activity on Node (AoN) or PERT notation to calculate the project duration. Clearly indicate the critical path for the project within your work.
b) Provide a time-based schedule (Gantt chart) diagram and associated resource histogram for the project, based upon an early start assumption.
c) Discuss the concept of activity ‘float' and improved resource planning (resource smoothing) may be used to adjust the schedule to provide a feasible and effective implementation for the ABC Plant Installations' project.
Question 5
a) How would you define risk management process?
b) What is the difference between mitigating a risk and contingency planning?
c) Given the project network and baseline information below, complete the form to develop a
status report for the project at the end of period 4 and the end of period 8. Report the final SV, CV, SPI and CPI for these periods. Based on your data, give your assessment of the current status of the project and that at completion (Answer sheet is attached with the question paper)
