Assignment: Inventory Your Skills

Richard Bolles says "There are two different kinds of employers out there: Those who are interested in hiring me for what I can do and those who are not." In this section, we will be creating an inventory of what you can do.

Some valuable advice given to me early on is to make a list of what you have accomplished in the past year, including what you learned, what projects you completed, and what job skills you were working on. If you have a list, this section will be easy. If you don't, this section will be necessary.

Option I: Skills inventory

Create a table in Word or Excel with 4 headers: Name of skill, where I learn it or use it, an example of the skill, and my preference for this skill - required. You may also want to have a column of what work condition is needed for this skill - optional (for example, if one of your skills is framing houses and one of your preferred working conditions from the previous week was to work outside, then you may want to note this). Be sure to list all the skills you can think of. Life skills count here, especially if they demonstrate a strength or talent.

Option II: Dependable strengths

Write a two or three-paragraph story of an accomplishment that you are proud of. This is an activity that you created or managed or initiated and not just an observer or participant. At the end of the story, identify at least ten strengths from the story.

Option III: Mind Map

Create a Mind Map of your life and work experiences. I recommend using the Brainstorming Diagram template in Visio or just drawing it out on a whiteboard or poster paper and sending a picture. Using a central theme of "My Skills" create categories and branches of your work skills, your life skills, your talents, and achievements. Remember to include all skills, not just ones you performed at "work".

Option IV: Create a timeline of your life and work experiences.

This can be in the form of a chronological narrative or a timeline pictorial. For each major and minor life event, list the skills and achievement from each.
