Utilizing Deep Learning To Enhance Recommender Systems In Music Streaming Applications
Research Objective
Listening to music is known to shape the moods and perception of persons. The various components of songs prompt different emotions for different persons. Music is often the main source for enjoyment or distraction from daily activities or challenges.
This research proposes to apply deep learning techniques to Recommender Systems ap- proaches in order to make a system that will provide users personalized choices while saving time spent in finding suitably genres of music they like.
Research Question
Since Music is oftentimes listened to in a sequential manner, how can a music recommender system be designed using deep learning to provide next song or a playlist recommendation?
Structure of the Proposal
The proposal is structured as follows:-
Section 2 (Literature Review) provides an overview of Recommender Systems, the applications of machine learning techniques (with special focus on deep learning) and Recommender Systems approaches in the entertainment industry domain.
Section 3 (Proposed Methodology) describes the proposed methodological approach that will be utilized in the research work. It will also include a project plan that details the tasks that will be carried out to complete the project.
Learning Outcome 1: Propose research objectives and identify possible deliverables;
Learning Outcome 2: Create a literature review which situates the work with regard to state of the art and seminal work. Develop a research and development design and methodology;
Learning Outcome 3: Critically assess and select methods for addressing the research question, including originality considerations;
Learning Outcome 4: Show an awareness of the ethical issues that need to be addressed when conducting research;
Learning Outcome 5: Understand the need for reproducibility as a minimum standard for assessing the validity of the results of research; and
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate an ability to write a comprehensive research plan that explores research methods and deliverables for a specific subject in computing.

Although it is permissible to use word-processors such as Microsoft Word to create the documents for each assignment, It is strongly advised that you use the LATEX document preparation system. Tutorials on LATEX are provided in the Moodle module page.
