GEB 3213 Career Writing - LinkedIn Assignment
Purpose - To develop the writing skills you'll need to apply for a job and be invited to an interview.
Assignment - Create a LinkedIn profile that plays upon your strengths and targets a specific job within your chosen career field.
The LinkedIn Cover Letter: Headshot, headline, and summary
Much like a cover letter (referred to as a cover message in Chapter 15 of the text), your headshot, headline, and summary are what potential employers see first.
Please review the links from YouTube below -
-LinkedIn for Students - This is an overview of LinkedIn and its features and purposes.
-LinkedIn for Students: Profile Basics: - This is an overview of setting up your profile.
-How to Create a Strong LinkedIn profile: - This has step-by-step instructions for many pertinent sections.
Please also review the MS Word document "FAU LinkedIn Articles" consisting of three articles posted in the course shell, plus the Mediasite presentation.
Now, create your headshot. Upload a high-quality photo of you alone, professionally dressed and groomed. To make your photo visible, you will have to hold your cursor over the added photo, select change photo, and then select Everyone under the lock icon. Also, create a custom background.
Create your headline (see more information in the presentation). It should follow the correct format and express who you are and what you want to do after graduation. Note: Headline max is 120 characters long.
Then, create your summary in three paragraphs:
Paragraph 1 - Should include a statement of what sort of career you are interested in and what you have to offer. As with all effective communication, your opening should establish your purpose and preview what you'll cover in the body.
Paragraph 2 - Should sell you and focus on the industry's needs.
Paragraph 3 - Should close and motivate action. Remember to include key search terms in all three paragraphs!
Under the Summary, don't forget to upload your document, site, video or presentation.
The LinkedIn Résumé: Work experience, education, skills, and accomplishments.
LinkedIn uses a chronological format. Create a complete and appropriate résumé targeted to your professional needs. In addition to your work experience and school information, add skills (though endorsements are not part of the grade), accomplishments (honors, awards) and organizations. Don't try to sell yourself with subjective phrases ("I'm an excellent communicator" or "highly organized and motivated") as these are opinions; stick to facts. Show, don't tell. Employers will decide if you are an excellent communicator after they meet you. Avoid including jobs held for a short time; your ability to assign relevance to experience and make it matter is key!One goal is to distinguish yourself from other job seekers, so always include unique information and wording that will set you apart. Remember that even if you do not have experience in your desired field, potential employers also look for individuals who see the value of their work history, whether it is related to the desired field.
Set your Profile to "public" so it can be viewed.
