Assignment - Residential Field Survey
Description
For this assignment, you will document the as-built conditions for a residential kitchen and bathroom. Field measure, photograph, and sketch the overall rooms. Assignment 1 will be plan views only (vertical elevation views are to be completed as part of Assignment 2). Include in your plans: walls, windows, doors, millwork, appliances, fixtures, and outlets. Compile a presentation that includes your initial hand sketches, photographs, notes, and finally your professionally drafted plan views. The professional quality plan views can be done by hand or in AutoCAD. Finished drawings must to include lineweights; line-types (use dashed lines to indicate upper cabinets); industry standard symbols for walls, windows, doors, and millwork (upper and lower cabinets); furniture; fixtures; appliances; and outlets. Also include annotations, dimensions, and a keyed legend for all symbols used. Refer to the course textbook for a list of symbols and drafting standards.
Instructions
1. Start by selecting a kitchen and bath to field survey. This must be a finished residential space. You may select your own kitchen and bath, or if you prefer you may ask for permission to field survey a neighbour or friend's kitchen and bath.
2. Use a tape measurer to field verify all plan view dimensions for both the kitchen and bath spaces. Create a hand sketch as you field measure that includes the approximate layout, dimensions, and notes obtained during your field survey.
3. Take photographs of each space. Photograph the overall space, as well as each wall, and the floor/ceiling planes.
4. After the field survey is complete, transfer your findings to a professional quality plan view. Your plans may be hand drafted or CAD drafted. Create a scale plan view drawing of the as -built
conditions. Use ¼" or ½" scale. Make sure to include industry standard line weights, line types, symbols, annotations, hatching, and dimensions.
5. Compile all work into a multi-page presentation. Include a scan of your initial field notes/field sketch, all photographs, and your final plans. Use a title block, proper spelling, and professional presentation quality in your final submission.
6. Save your completed presentation in PDF format and submit for instructor review.
