BSBOPS501 Manage business resources
Defining the project scope
Part 1: Work Breakdown Structure
Research the top-down method for breaking down tasks.
Activity definition
• Writing an activity list
• Identification of milestones
• Decomposition
• WBS
Activity sequencing
• Critical path analysis
• PERT
• Gantt charts
Activity resource estimation
• Resources such as equipment, materials, etc.
• Human resources
• Activity duration estimation
• Whether its most likely or what the worst-case scenario would be
What you use will be dependent upon the organisational policies and procedures and will be within the project scope and governance requirements.
Part 2:
Use the following information to construct a Gantt chart which shows timings for deliverables:
Work in small groups for this activity. Consider the following scenario and answer the questions that follow.
Cabins4Life is a cabin business. Recently they have been awarded a contract to construct a small garden shed. They have three weeks to complete the project and have been given a budget of $10,000. The shed will just be a shell to begin with so it will only involve the following:
• Obtaining planning and permits
• Preparation of the construction site
• Finalising design
• Undertaking the construction
• Cleaning.
It will also be required to be in compliance with any building regulations. Using the five tasks listed, break these down into smaller components.
Part 3:
Once this has been completed re-evaluate the tasks and identify if any require a further break down.
Now look at each of the five components again. Is there anything missing?
Create a Gantt chart that reflects these project tasks, using the information provide in the previous task.
Part 4:
Consider the Cabin4Life scenario. List some of the measures for success. Use the table as a guide:
Objective Performance indicator Performance measure
Obtain permit Permit for build is approved Permit allows build of shed.
Part 5:
Conduct research using the internet or your workplace for a client agreement that could be used for a building project such as in the scenario provided for Cabins4Life. Try to source an agreement that is relevant.
Check with your trainer if it is relevant and then continue with the activity.
Select one of the component tasks identified in the previous activity (for example 1. Obtain Planning and Permits). List down the main elements for an agreement between the builder and the client and any external sources.
Activity: Group work
Source a scope management plan either from the internet or your workplace.
Meet with your group. Discuss what you can include in the scope management plan for the Cabins4life scenario. Create your own scope management plan that includes:
• An introduction and background for the project
• A scope statement
• Project assumptions and constraints
• Project stakeholders
• A work breakdown structure
• A scope control process
