TASK: CASE STUDY ANALYSIS USING CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING TECHNIQUE
Having read the attached case study First Lady Fashions the task is as follows:
Assume you, as the consultant, or part of a small team of consultants, have been asked by the owner and president of First Lady Fashions, Harry Gold, to come in and help the company tackle their problems.
You have decided to use a soft systems approach- namely the Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), and you willfollow some of the steps of this methodology.
You will need to imagine you are working with, or guiding, a small group of people from the organisation, who you have identified as the key or most relevant people to tackle the problems.
In SSM, it is very much the case of the group drawn from the organisation that will structure, or explore the problem, and so move towards the action to take and hopefully an eventual solution. It is they who provide the ideas, concepts, relevant systems, models, and discussion.
Each person will have his or her own view of the problem situation.
i) Create a small (A4size) Rich Picture with which to view the current problem situation. It should contain the key aspects you can identify in the whole problem situation. This should include recent as well as current aspects, activities and events as described over the whole case study.
ii) Identify and state what you see as six main problems or problem themes and say a few words on each one.
iii) Think of one suitable notional, ideal or relevant system, with which to explore one of these problem themes.
The problem can be based on a major primary task or tasks, or can be a major issue facing the organisation;
Provide a full root definition for this system, and state the CATWOE criteria.
iv) Create a full conceptual model for this system
v) Using a table format, compare the model with current real world activities, and identify the differences. Select two of these differences to be debated.
vi) Identify and describe two possible changes that could be made. Briefly, examine the feasibility and desirability of each
vii) Recommend what action needs to be taken.
NB. For both i) and ii) above, do make sure you take account of and represent the different views or perspectives of the main figures or groups in the problem situation.
Any help or clarification needed for the project will be given.
