Assessment Description
As a professional educator, you will be responsible for seeking out professional development opportunities to further advance your career and to deepen your knowledge of teaching and learning.
Allocate at least 3 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Research professional development (PD) opportunities available in your district. Discuss with your mentor meaningful professional development opportunities they have attended. How does the teaching team work together to stay current on instructional strategies and existing and emerging technologies?
Additionally, seek out an instructional specialist at the school or district level who has insight into what professional development is available and how the topics are chosen. Discuss the process for creating a professional development plan at the school/district level with this individual.
Be sure to address the following in your interview with the mentor teacher:
- What meaningful PD opportunities have you attended or facilitated?
- Have you had the chance to attend a PD regarding school culture? If so, describe it? If not, what would you imagine a PD on promoting culturally inclusive environments would look like, based on your school/district?
- How does your teaching team continue to create a culturally inclusive learning environment, regardless of whether there is available PD?
- How does your teaching team stay current on teaching strategies and existing and emerging technologies?
Ask the instructional specialist the following additional questions:
- How are PD topics chosen?
- What is the process for creating a PD plan at the school/district level?
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
In a 250-500 word reflection, summarize the professional development discussions. How will you use this knowledge in your future professional practice?
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
