Assignment: Variable Transformation and Data Analysis SPSS Worksheet
Instructions:
For this lab use the dataset linked below Answer the questions below using your assigned readings and lectures as resources. Lectures and reading will be provided separately. Be sure to fully answer each question and provide the necessary tables and interpretations for each question. Use SPSS to answer questions.
Use this data for the questions below (Lab 1).
I. Take CourseGrade and collapse it into the grade categories below. Call the new variable LetterGrade. Be sure to update the labels and values in "Variable View". Create a frequency distribution and interpret the output.
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 0-59%
II. Take the Location variable and collapse suburban and rural into one category so that you end up with two categories-Urban and Other. Call this new variable NewLocation. Be sure to update the labels and values in "Variable View". Create a frequency distribution and interpret the output.
III. Break CourseGrade into 4 equal categories. Then run a frequency distribution and create a histogram to show the categories are generally equal.
IV. Multiply CourseGrade by 2 and then report the mean and median of this new variable.
V. Create a crosstabulation between LetterGrade (DV) and NewLocation (IV). Provide an interpretation of the output.
VI. Add Gender as a layer variable to the crosstab you created in question #5. Provide an interpretation of the output.
VII. Considering the crosstab generated in question #5, what is the probability that a randomly selected observation is located in an urban area? What is the probability that a randomly selected observation has a letter grade of A given that they are from an urban area?
VIII. Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the CourseGrade. What do you find?
IX. Considering question #8, what is the probability that a student's test score is:
i. Below the mean?
ii. Below 84%
iii. Above 84%
iv. Between the mean and 84% (Apply what you know about normal distributions and z-scores to answer this question.
