The purpose of this lab is to learn more about hashes and verification of an image and files via hashing.

It is important in this lab to not only discuss the processes and results but also show them. Make sure take screenshots (one of each hash result) and discuss them. You can take more if necessary. Please make sure to embed them in your document and label them (e.g., Lab2-Image1: MD5 Hash Result of______).

Assignment

For this lab, you will need the image in the Course Content called Labs2-3.001

1. Using dd create a copy of this image to a floppy or USB thumb drive.

2. Use any of the methods you have seen for doing an MD5 and SHA-1 hash to verify the original image and the USB (or floppy) drive image. Check the course resource page for some additional programs. Make sure to take screenshots to show the similarities.

3. For at least two files on the image, verify each file with MD5 and SHA-1. Make sure to take screenshots.

4. After you have done this, change one file by some means (resize picture, add character, etc), and rerun the hashes of the two files. Make sure to take screenshots.

5. Write a report to describe the results of your actions and illustrate them with your labeled screenshots.
