Commercial Packaging Solution
Using Adobe Illustrator to create a commercial packaging for a product.
You are required to design and create a physical prototype of a packaging solution for a commercial product of your choice (this can be an existing or new product/brand).
The design should have a strong focus on the visual design for marketing the product to the desired target audience, whilst also considering the sustainability and ecological impact of the materials and manufacturing processes required to bring it to market.
The design needs to consider the product itself and any labelling required, the outer container that would be placed on a retail shelf, plus a shipping container including any box fill and postage requirements. The solution must include the brand/designer/item name, appropriate graphics and any relevant specifications that need to be included (net weight, ingredients etc - this will depend on the type of product it is).
Please design these items using Adobe Illustrator, as is industry standard.
Give thought to the customer experience of every aspect of the design, and demonstrate this experience in a well-produced "unboxing" video explaining the design details. This unboxing video should be conversational, engaging and informative in its delivery, similar to the examples from Lumi, shown over the semester.
Submit a well-designed 6-8 page PDF designed in InDesign, documenting your design process including initial concept sketches, development drawings, flat net design showing the die-line information that have been created in Illustrator, photographs of the final design from multiple angles process in Photoshop, and a 200 word rationale of the final solution.
Deliverables:
• Physical prototype of product, outer packaging and shipping packaging. Completed in Illustrator. If we're still in lockdown we'll organise a contactless drop off so we can collect your physical prototypes.
• A2 Poster (please provide a print ready artwork PDF file) including title, logo, high-quality photographs of prototype, and short description of project.
• Unboxing video showcasing the customer experience of the packaging (link to dropbox folder with video file).
• Submit a well-designed 6-8 page PDF designed in InDesign, documenting your design process including initial concept sketches, development drawings, flat net design showing the die-line information, photographs of the final design from multiple angles, and a 200 word rationale of the final solution.
• 4-6 square social graphics detailing the project with your branding included (suitable for Instagram or your portfolio) in a zip file.
