Case Study: Food Truck
Jason loves cooking meals and hosting parties for his friends and family. After high school, Jason graduated from Humber's Culinary Skills program with high honours. As student representatives for Humber College, Jason and his team competed in nationwide challenges and competitions, winning the Amazing Duck Race hosted by King Cole Ducks and placing second in the Nestle Professional Maggi & Minors Food Truck Challenge.
After graduation, Jason worked part time at various restaurants in York Region as assistant chef, pastry chef and sous-chef. Full time work is hard to find in this industry! On the side, Jason, took over his parent's kitchen and started catering for small weekend events. Jason's brother who is a mechanic, found a food truck that a couple in Perth, Ontario were using to operate their summer/weekend fish and chips business. The couple had recently retired and were thrilled to sell their truck to an enterprising millennial! Jason started using the truck as a kitchen facility in his catering business.
Jason's business is growing. He recently purchased an established food truck business that operates solely outside of the local Home Hardware. This business has a large clientele that enjoys the traditional food truck menus that the business is known for. Jason is now able to focus full time on his business. His practice of keeping notes on his phone or on the floor of his car is failing him and he has decided to invest in a system that he can access his iPhone or his laptop.
Most importantly to Jason, is being able to take care of his finances. Filing income tax is annoying as he can never find his receipts and he forgets small catering jobs. Jason would like the ability to save images of receipts with a record of what he's purchased and be able to retrieve his sales.
Now that his sales have exceeded $30,000 per year, he has to file HST with the Canada Revenue Agency and needs to have access to that value as part of his sales - expenses.
Scheduling catering jobs is also a big item for Jason. Being able to view your clients' addresses on a map to help him plan his deliveries is very important as trucks are hard on gas.
Jason must be able to guarantee that his client's personal data is secure. This is challenging for Jason as he's misplaced his iPhone a couple of times since he started the business!
Your task this semester is to understand Jason's business and work on the design of new software to fit his needs.
Inventory Module
Jason buys ingredients from local grocery supply businesses for his recipes. One of Jason's frequent customers has been diagnosed with celiac disease and has approached Jason to include gluten free items on his menu.
Jason has been warned by Food Health Inspectors that he must publish his ingredients and calorie counts on his menu.
As well, Jason wonders about food recalls and how would he know if an ingredient that he's been using in his recipes has been recalled.
Jason would like a system that helps him organize his purchases, instead of having to look through a combination of online orders and paper receipts. He would like the ability to attach a copy or picture of the receipt to the purchase for tax purposes.
