Using either Google Patent search or the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website determine if your idea has already been patented. Create a bulleted list of your brainstorming words ("Write down all the words you can think of that describe your invention."). Then write down the patent classification that applies to that word from the U.S. Patent Classification Index. Then list any and all sub-classifications that may apply. Include the classification and sub-classification codes. Identify the subclass number that most closely matches your invention.

Once you find the correct classification code, you must examine all the patents to determine if your invention is original. Do this for each class/subclass combination that relates to the invention. Your finished paper should follow the format of the example attached.
