Textbook Reading: p. 81-83

I. Guiding Questions:

An often overlooked aspect of writing is the audience. Review the assigned textbook pages, paying special attention to the section on the audience. Answer three (3) of the bullet point questions on p. 82.

II. Create a Roadmap:

Effective writers organize their thoughts before they organize their documents. A Roadmap is a method that allows you to quickly capture your ideas which helps ensure a complete and well-organized document. The roadmap encourages brevity and clarity, frees you to generate ideas first, before focusing on formal outlines or writing perfect sentence), and captures ideas quickly. The flexibility of a roadmap lets you work with your ideas on the most basic level, allowing you to "brainstorm" for complete content and "try out" different organizational patterns. Think of it as brainstorming for the outline of your paper.

To get started, click on the template and student example linked above. You will find an organization pattern and guiding topics to build your discovery draft. Complete sentences are not necessary (actually, please avoid them!). If you find that you do not need each of the sections, delete them. If you find that you need more sections, add them. This is your discovery draft, develop it to benefit the goals you have in mind for your paper.
