Question: In this assignment, you'll combine both your ability to source relevant case law with your ability to craft an articulate memo. Moving away from home and living close to campus is part of the post-secondary experience for many students. Sadly, sub-optimal living conditions often go hand in hand with student property rental. In Peterborough's case, low vacancy rates can combine with other stressors (food instability, rent money, scholastic responsibilities) to create some pretty anxiety-inducing living circumstances.
Consider your own rental experience or those of a friend or family member. Using the Landlord Tenant Board Decisions section of the free CanLII database website, find and download two decisions related to these kinds of issues. If you can't think of any yourself, you can use any combination of the following garden variety umbrella rental issues to get started:
• Eviction
• Manipulative or predatory landlords
• Rent Increase
• General repairs and damages
• Pests and insects (rats, bedbugs, etc.)
Submit the information of your decisions in Blackboard as follows:
• In an MS Word document, record the citation of each decision you selected.
• Briefly explain how these decisions relate to the umbrella issues above.
• If applicable, have you or your student friends experienced any of these issues?
• Submit your MS Word document information and the downloaded decisions.
In addition to practicing your ability to research and articulate relevant judgements, the goal of this assignment is to generate relevant, working knowledge that can be mobilized within our learning community (and perhaps even more broadly).
