CPOL 600: Media's Role in the Rise and Fall of Populism and Other Social Movement - The Catholic University of America
1. - Each student will be required to produce one Case Study Paper (approximately 15 pages) on a topic of their choice in which they will analyze the use of the media in a particular political event or issue campaign (which should not be the same issue or topic chosen for the oral final exam) and critiquing why it was or was not effective and how it could have been done differently to achieve success. This Case Study Paper will be an in depth analysis selected by the student in consultation with the Professor during the term.
Each Case Study Paper should draw on relevant articles, books and interviews, etc. to get an accurate, detailed and sophisticated picture of the use of all forms of media in the 24-hour news cycle and the role it has played historically and today in the rise of Populism or in connection with another great social movement.
2. - Each student will also be required to prepare a Project Statement as a mid-term exercise which will become the outline for your Oral Final Examination presentation. This topic should be selected by the student in consultation with the Professor.
3. - Each student will participate in an oral final examination as a guest spokesperson in which they will prepare a 10 minute presentation to promote an issue, campaign or a candidate and will be subject to questioning from both the instructor and their fellow students who will participate as the Audience - Media.
4. - All students are expected to do the prescribed readings and viewings listed for each class in advance and be prepared to participate in the general flow of the class.
5. - At the beginning of each class one student - who will be assigned in advance for the next class - will lead the discussion in the next class analyzing the interplay of the media and politics on one of the news topics of the week. In preparing to lead the ‘Hot Topics' discussion, each student should also draw from relevant articles, interviews, and all forms of media from the week and a comparison to a similar historic event from our readings and viewing. Each student will have an opportunity to lead at least one session.
