Assignment - Network Simulation Using NS-2

Objectives:

1. Learn the basics of NS-2.
2. Use NS-2 to evaluate the performance of a network.

Preliminary Steps:

1. Read about NS-2and understand the basics. Use the following resources:
a. This resource is a good start
b. Chapter 31 of the textbook "An Introduction to Computer Networks" by Peter Dordal; available on Moodle.
2. Understand the implementation of NS-2
a. What is C++ used for?
b. What is Otcl/tcl used for ?
3. Install NS-2 on your machine. Since it works only on Linux or Mac machines. If you have a Windows machine, here are some options on how to create a Linux-like environment under Windows:
a. Cygwin.
b. Power Shell - Windows subsystem for Linux.
c. Virtual Machine.

The Assignment:
1. Build a simple network using NS-2.
2. Simulate this network and evaluate its performance in terms of:
a. Throughput (in term of bps).
b. Efficiency.

Deliverables:
1. Demo
2. Report
a. Objective.
b. Introduction: Provide a brief background on NS-2.
c. Example network: Describe the network you want to simulate. You should provide snapshots of this network as created by NS-2.
d. Simulation results: Present the results generated by your simulation
e. Conclusion: Provide a summary of the lessons learnt out of this assignment.
