COVID-19 and Canada in a global world
This assignment calls on you to offer a mature, reflective and personal written account of your experience of INS 400,
Canada in a Global World: Migration, Citizenship and Belonging articulated using the concepts from the readings, videos, and lectures relevant to your experience.
The course was intended to bring together students from various schools, faculties, and programs to reflect on Canadian society in the globalized world we live in, starting from each student's own experience.
Our course unfolded in the context of a disruptive 3-week protest in the name of freedom (idea) in Ottawa (institution) organized by truck drivers (interests), and it ended with the simmering threat of a third world war.
The effects of these events on each of our lives will have been determined by the three elements of the subtitle of the course: migration, citizenship and belonging.
Of these three, belonging is the most difficult to characterize from an academic, social scientific point of view, and yet, from a personal point of view, might be the most important.
The starting point of this assignment asks you to think about your own experience of belonging:
Questions are
1)Where do you belong?
2) To whom do you belong?
3) When and where, and with whom do you not belong?
4) What is belonging like under the current social and legal conditions?
The remaining grades will be for your ability to articulate connections between specific aspects of the current situation (at a personal, a community, a group or some other kind of level) to the course themes as spelled out in the description above.
