Question

The difference between productive and counterproductive behaviors within an organization are vast. Productive behavior includes doing a job quickly and efficiently, ensuring the job is done correctly and promptly. Good employee performance will enhance an organization's productivity. For an employee to have good job performance, they need the ability and motivation to do their job well. Organizational practices and job conditions can affect this area tremendously, either by providing the employee with motivation, or by being an organizational constraint, hindering performance. Good leadership and proper training enhance these behaviors. Inadequate training can interfere with good job performance by not giving the employee the tools necessary to be successful. Counterproductive work behaviors are acts that are harmful to either the employee, organization or both. These behaviors steer away from organizational goals and can also affect the work enviornment, and the performance of others. Some common counterproductive work behaviors are sabotage, theft, and withdrawal. Sabotage can occur when an employee purposely does something harmful, theft can be time, money, or goods and withdrawal occurs with absenteeism, tardiness, and high turnover rates. Counterproductive work behaviors can occur due to burnout, poor leadership, bad working conditions and more and affect a company's productivity.
