Question: "You just received a letter accepting your presentation proposal for an ABA Conference. This is a big conference, and many other BCBAs, service providers, teachers, and psychologists attend. You have decided to present a case study about one of your clients and a successful intervention. You make sure to change any names to ensure confidentiality. You gave your presentation and are pleased with the outcome. However, a psychologist in the audience recognized the scenario because she works with the child and his family. This psychologist tells the child's parents about the scenario presented at the conference, and the parent is distraught. She calls your agency to file a complaint. What should you do?"

In the above scenario, the BACB codes 2.10 Documenting Professional Work and Research, 2.06 Maintaining Confidentiality, 1.01 Reliance on Scientific Knowledge, 1.02 Boundaries of Competence, and 2.10 Documenting Professional Work and Research. However, is it possible that the psychologist is the one who was mistaken for going to the family and not the BCBA to discuss the concerns and now has created a situation in which the BCBA must handle the presumed ethics violation and a parent who is upset? Could the psychologist have created many unnecessary problems for the BCBA? Did the BCBA perhaps violate code 2.0 Responsibility to Clients by not seeking permission to share the case prior to doing so?
